The University was established in Western Odisha to fulfill the dreams of people of western Odisha when The Sambalpur University Act was passed on 10th December, 1996. The University came into function from 1st January, 1967 and then the vice – chancellor was Prof. Parsuram Mishra. On 4th January, 1967 this university was inaugurated by Honourable Chancellor A.N.Khosla. When the University came into function then it was in a private building on rent at Dhanupali, Sambalpur and another was at Ainthapali, Sambalpur in government building (from 1968 to 1972).
In 1973 the University had shifted to the present campus which is at Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The territorial jurisdiction of the University is covered in ten districts which are as follows:

There are twenty Post – Graduate Departments and under these twenty departments there are twenty- seven post graduation subjects in Sambalpur University.
The Post graduation department of university offers M.Phil study program for one year. University offers a study programme for degrees of M.A/ M.Sc/ LL.M/ M.Lib and Inf. Science for two years. In Sambalpuri studies there is a P.G. Diploma course in Computer Science and application.

In the year 2000 BCA, PGDCA and PGDIT courses were launched by the Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education.
In the year 2003 MCA and DCA courses were started by the Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education. Both the direct and lateral courses were started.
In the year 2006 full time MBA course was started by the Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education (D.D.C.E).
From 1967 there have been many vice – chancellors which are Prof. R.K. In the University Campus there are nearly ten post- graduate hostels. Out of these ten post graduate hostels there are four ladies hostels and there are six Men hostels. There many facilities provided to the hostelers like STD telephone booth, Common room with T.V., First aid, Reading room with newspaper and magazine etc. There is one health centre, one faculty house, cafeteria, community centre and many more facilities in the campus of Sambalpuri University. The University has been a well established University and is growing at a higher rate. University is expected to reach the height of success and it continues to providing the best and quality education to all the students. Sambalpur University Courses are designed in a way to feed the students with all the information and are making their students competent enough to face the professional world of technocrats. Sambalpur University has been welcoming students with gestures of learning and of gaining knowledge.
