As per the official notification released by the National Testing Agency (NTA) which is the conducting body of JEE Main Exam, the exam dates, until further notice, have been postponed in order to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. Students who applied for the examination have been granted more time to prepare themselves for one of the toughest examinations conducted across the country. Here is what students must prepare for and how the question paper is designed.
The National Testing Agency released JEE Main Exam Pattern along with the official notification on the official website of JEE Main i.e. jeemain.nta.nic.in. NTA being the examination conducting authority announces the detailed exam pattern of JEE Main including number of questions and what type of questions are asked in the exam. There have been several changes introduced in the exam pattern of JEE Main Exam. JEE Main 2023 would contain 3 papers in which students can appear based on the eligibility criteria defined by NTA. Besides, there will be separated exam papers for B. E./B. Tech, B. Arch., and B. Planning courses.
The questions asked in JEE Main Exam are of multiple-choice type. Candidates appearing in any of the three papers must ensure that they fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria defined by the National Testing Agency. Besides, candidates should be aware of number of questions and what type of questions are asked in the paper.
- Paper 1 is conducted for admission to B. E./B. Tech and it generally consists of 3 subjects namely Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
- Paper 2 is for admission to B. Arch and the questions asked in this section are objective type for Mathematics and Aptitude.
- Paper 3 is conducted for admission to B. Planning and the questions are of MCQ type.
Before appearing for the exam, it is important for students to go through the exam pattern as it can help them attain an idea of nature of the exam, what weightage is given to each section, and duration of the exam. There are various other features of the national level entrance examination that students can have look at by going through the examination pattern.
Highlights of JEE Main 2023 Exam Pattern
- B. E./B. Tech question paper would consist of 75 questions i.e. 25 questions in each section (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics).
- There have been Numerical Value Based questions added to all the three papers of JEE Main.
- Question paper of B. Arch would contain a total of 77 questions.
- While the question paper of B. Planning would contain 100 questions.
- Part 3 of B. Planning question paper would consist of 25 questions of planning based objective type MCQ.
Note* Candidates can apply for both B. Arch and B. Planning Papers, in such case the duration to complete the exam would increase to 3 hours 30 minutes.

Detailed Description of JEE Main 2023 Exam Pattern
Paper 1 – B. E./B. Tech
There are three sections in which the question paper (Paper 1) is divided, and the sections are Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Knowing JEE Main Syllabus would help students attain more clarity about what they should study in order to score well.
Marking Scheme:
- Students will be rewarded with +4 marks for each correct answer (For MCQs) and -1 mark would be deducted as penalty for an incorrect one.
- Questions that remain unattempted would not result in deduction of any marks.
- Questions that are not of multiple-choice type would stand for +4 marks for each correct answer.
- No negative marking would be there in case of unattempted question.

The question paper is divided in three sections namely Mathematics, Aptitude, and Drawing. Mathematics and Aptitude sections are conducted online i.e. through computer-based mode while, Drawing section needs to be done offline through pen and paper mode.
This paper gets students admission through undergraduate architecture programs.
