Mithibai College of Arts was established as part of education initiatives taken by Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal (SVKM), which a charitable trust formed under the Society’s Registration Act and Bombay Public Trust Act in the year 1934.
Mithibai College was established in the year 1961 as the extension of SVKM vision on its silver jubilee celebration. The Mithibai College of Arts was 1st institute in the plan of trust to spread across the nation followed by Chauhan Institute of Science, these two are commonly known as the main wing of the Trust, and later after 19 years Amrutben Jivanlal College of Commerce & Economics which is an autonomous college took shape.
The college is focused on providing higher education accessible to the maximum population and create future leaders in many fields including research. Currently, Mithibai college has 32 departments out of which 16 departments carry out postgraduate programmes and there are 10 fully dedicated research departments carrying out and encouraging research in various streams. The institute promotes providing education at its best to meritorious and deserving candidate irrespective of their financial backgrounds.
The institute was started with the vision “To be recognized as a premier educational institution that practices quality pedagogy, encourages innovation and research while instilling values and providing a vibrant environment for the holistic development of students into valuable global citizens.” It was the dedication of the institute which landed it in the position of best college of Mumbai University for the academic year of 2018-2019, along with 2nd rank in best arts faculty as per the list published by India Today. The year 2018 proved to be an important year in the development paradigm of Mithibai College as it is awarded DST-FIST and DBT-Star College grants of Rs.1.5 Crores by Government of India.
At Mithibai college of Arts specific emphasis is given to the all-round development of the individual students and other than developing academic expertise, extra-curricular activities are also on focus. The curriculum is designed to incorporate programs for development of skill, confidence and hidden talents of the students and help them grow as an individual in personal and professional life.
Mithibai College in the year 2004 has established the Internal Quality Cell (IQAC) to promote and regulate the quality and enhance teaching-learning policies. In the year 2012, the college introduces Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM) into its course is currently one of the most sought-after courses among the students who want to make a career in media and mass communication.
