Maulana Azad College was established in the year 1926 as Islamia College by Victor Bulwe-Lytton, then Governor of Bengal. Post-independence the institute was named as the Central Calcutta College and later in 1960, the institute was renamed as ‘Maulana Azad College' which is affiliated to the University of Calcutta and functions under the administrative control of the Higher Education Department, Government of West Bengal. The institute was accredited B++ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in the year 2007. The college is located at Central Kolkata, West Bengal near the junction of Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road and SN Banerjee Road.
Maulana Azad College offers numerous Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses in the field of Arts, Science and Commerce with a maximum number of enrollments in the Arts stream. The institute functions with the mission of serving both Men and Women students, including the first-generation degree-seekers from the Minority Communities and Economically Weaker Sections of the Society and imparts education with the objective of ‘Changing Times by introducing New Courses of study and Enrichment Programmes'. The college also emphasizes on enhancing individual growth and supports scholarly activities.
The campus area has a three-storied building with two four-storied annex buildings comprising of Classrooms, Seminar Halls, Tutorial Spaces, Laboratories, Networking & Wi-Fi Connectivity, Museums maintained by Zoology department, Library, Language Laboratory, Playground, Common Room, and Gymnasium. The college provides hostel facility for the Muslim male candidates who do not have a residence in or around Kolkata. The Boys' Hostel i.e. Baker Government Hostel is located at Smith Lane, Kolkata, whereas, the girls' hostel is under construction with assistance from University Grant Commission (UGC). The library at Maulana Azad College carries nearly 90 thousand books with 29 Journals or Periodicals. The institute also organizes five yearly festivals i.e. MAC Festival, Saraswati Puja, Miladun- Nabi, Mushaira, and Milanutsav.

Eligibility for Under Graduate Courses:
The candidate must have passed Higher Secondary Examination i.e. 10+2 either from Council of Higher Secondary Education, West Bengal or from an equivalent examination board recognized by the University of Calcutta with at least five subjects including English.
The institute offers Post Graduate courses in following subjects:
English, Urdu and Zoology.

The candidate must possess an Under Graduate degree of at least three years from a University recognized by the University of Calcutta.
