Engineering without a doubt is one of the most common higher education and career choices in India and significantly high number of students taking admissions in the different streams of engineering is a clear indication of the same. The number of colleges offering engineering degree in India is also very high in ratio comparing with colleges of other courses.
The popularity of course and college is also very significant from the number of registration taking place every year in the national level engineering entrance exams like JEE Main, JEE Advanced, BITSAT, VITEEE, WBJEE, and others.
Before we go ahead to check the list of top engineering colleges in 2018 it is important to know what is NIRF and the parameters on which the colleges are ranked for better clarification on why a particular college is allotted the respective rank.
NIRF is abbreviated for The National Institutional Ranking Framework which came in existence from September 29, 2015, approved by Minister of Human Resource Development. The NIRF give rankings to the colleges under various categories like top 100 engineering colleges in India or top MBA colleges in India, the ranking is done on basis of some pre underlined parameters which we are going to discuss in details further.
NIRF Parameters |
Areas Covered |
Teaching, Learning & Resources |
• Student Strength including students enrolled for Doctoral |
Research and Professional Practices |
• Combined metric for Publications (PU) |
Graduation Outcomes |
• Combined percentage for Placement, Higher Studies, and Entrepreneurship (GPHE) |
Outreach and Inclusivity |
• Percent Students enrolled from other states and countries (Region Diversity) |
Perception |
• Peer Perception: Employers and Research Investors (PREMP) |
On basis of the above-mentioned parameters of ranking, every year since 2015 NIRF releases a list of top engineering colleges of India to help students self-analyze everything and choose the best college for themselves. The higher the ranks the better the college is. For example, in the year 2017, the engineering college topped the list was IIT Madras followed by IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi. Similarly, a list is released for 2018 also after evaluating and analyzing the colleges on the said parameters.
IIT Madras like last year again standing strong in the 1st position with an overall score of 88.95. Established in the year 1959, IIT Madras is the best Engineering college of India in all category and officially is “Institute of National Importance”. Talking about the parameters particularly IIT Madras have 606 faculty members who are qualified Ph.D. degree holder, which is probably the highest in any of the IIT or public engineering college. Under the parameter of Graduation outcome, the average salary offered to an undergraduate student, as per the placement report released by the Institute for the year 2017-18 was Rs 11, 00,000. Similarly, for post-graduate students, the average salary offered was Rs. 8, 87,500. The institute also focuses on outreach and inclusivity for maintaining the maximum diversity and distribution of opportunities.
