PET Exam Overview
B1 Preliminary, formerly known as Cambridge English Preliminary or Preliminary English Test (PET). It is a Cambridge Assessment English language examination (previously known as Cambridge English Language Assessment and University of Cambridge ESOL examinations), which is an intermediate-level qualification for students who have learned the fundamentals of English and now have practical language skills for daily use. It is designed to meet the Common European Framework of Reference Level B1 requirements (CEFR). B1 Preliminary is one of the Cambridge English Qualifications tests, which is a path for increasing language abilities. Each Cambridge English Qualification focuses on a certain level of the CEFR and works in tandem to provide an effective learning path.
B1 Preliminary Score
A distinct score will be given to candidates for each of the four abilities (reading, writing, listening, and speaking), allowing them to see how well they are doing. These four scores are summed to give them an overall exam score. They will also be assigned a grade and a level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

When can one expect to get their B1 Preliminary Statement of Results?
In response to the COVID-19 epidemic, exam centers have more flexibility in offering exam sessions. Because of this enhanced flexibility, as well as the ongoing impact of COVID-19, results are now issued later than regular results issue dates. When the results will be revealed, they will be stated on the Confirmation of Entry paper one get from their center. Each ability is assigned a score on the Cambridge English Scale (Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking).

Two Different PET Scores
It might be a little complex, and many students ask how to do it. There are simply two different PET scores-
- The first one indicates the marks candidates receive for each correct answer
- The second one is the candidate's Cambridge English Scale score, which can compute based on their marks.
The 60% rule still applies under the current system but no longer utilizes per cent. Each component of the B1 Preliminary exam is worth 25% of the overall score. Today, valid B1 Preliminary test scores vary from 120 to 170. A score of 140 or more is deemed a "pass," and students with such a score will be awarded the B1 Preliminary test certificate, which corresponds to CEFR level B1 in English. The results are divided into four sections of the exam, as well as an overall score and the relevant CEFR level.
If the student passed the B1 Preliminary, they will also obtain a B1 English certificate that is valid for life. To pass the PET and earn the certification, you must score higher than 60%. There is no such thing as a middle ground in certification, therefore the PET is either authorized or suspended. It is valid for life, while some educational institutions prefer a maximum of two years after receiving the certificate.
How to calculate PET exam scores?
To summarise, in order to compute the score of any Cambridge test, simply perform the following-
- Add the points from each section of the test.
- Determine the proportion of each component.
- Calculate the sum of all the components' scores.
- Use Cambridge's calculator to convert your percentage.
- However, as easy as these methods may appear, the first thing you need to do if you want to compute your test score is to thoroughly understand your exam.
- You need to know how many pieces there are and how much each one is worth.
Outcomes of PET Exam
- Candidates who pass the exam receive two documents: a Statement of Results and a Certificate.
- Employers and other organizations may request one or both of these papers as proof of English language proficiency.
- Candidates can get an online Statement of Results four to six weeks after the paper-based exam and two weeks after the computer-based exam.
