LOR Overview

A letter of recommendation (LOR) is a statement endorsing a person's academic or professional achievements. Your overall personality is evaluated in the letter, taking into account traits, strengths, and weaknesses, as well as teamwork and class participation. The recommendation letters are generally written by previous professors, employers, clients, teachers, or counselors.

In the world of academia, LOR is frequently required for graduate degree programs. In programs like MBA, MS, Computer Science, etc., letters of recommendation are one of the most important courses.

What is LOR?

The LOR, or letter of recommendation, is a crucial component of your application that can affect the admissions committee's decision because it enables them to assess your qualifications and suitability for the course you've applied for from the recommender's perspective. Typically, you must submit at least three LORs for any courses you apply for in order to study abroad for a Bachelor's, Master's, PhD, or MBA program. In every LOR, the recommender's relationship with the student should be discussed. For instance, if the recommender is a professor, it is wise to discuss the subject taught, the length of the relationship, and all the opportunities the professor had to assess the student's abilities.

Why are recommendation letters important?

You must have your recommenders identified and have gotten their consent to prepare your letter well in advance because almost every application requires the submission of 2-3 recommendation letters. Additionally, a LOR should not be undervalued because it is nearly as important as your admissions essays, statements of purpose, resumes, or any other document for that matter. Having letters of recommendation from professors and other knowledgeable and experienced individuals lends credibility to your entire application. Similar to choosing the right recommender, there are a few important considerations to keep in mind so that you can submit stellar LORs to the admissions committee.

Mistakes to Avoid in LOR

  1. Everyone should be very careful not to submit a LOR that has been copied from the internet. It is prohibited & also reduces your chances for admission.
  2. LOR ought to be written by an expert. You cannot allow friends or family to write a letter on your behalf. Someone who is familiar with your academic accomplishments and background should write it.
  3. Spelling errors are the only thing that can ruin your LOR, so make sure you proofread it before submitting it to the authority
  4. Make sure you include all the information in your LOR; omitting any crucial details could cause you to fall behind.
  5. Rushing things could ruin your LOR, so give the person 2-3 weeks to write it and give your recommender adequate time.

LOR Guidelines

It's crucial that you adhere to the LOR guidelines and don't make any mistakes. Here are some standard recommendations and LOR formats that you can use when writing a LOR.

  1. LOR should not be handwritten.
  2. LOR font should be size 11 & in black color.
  3. Avoid grammatical & spelling errors.
  4. Do not exceed the word limit of 500-600.
  5. Don't exaggerate the points.
  6. If the university requires 2-3 LOR, make sure they have different content.

Types of LORs

Based on the type of recommender, recommendation letters can be broadly divided into two categories:

1. Academic LOR

A letter of recommendation from a professor at your current or former educational institution is known as an academic LOR. You will typically need to submit two or three LORs from your previous institution to universities. This could be professors from your college if you're applying to master's or doctoral programs, or it could be your school's instructors if you're taking undergraduate courses. The content of the Letter of Recommendation (LOR) Format from Faculty frequently varies and calls for the professor to highlight the applicant's successes as a course participant. Often, these are more relevant to MS colleges abroad or bachelor courses abroad.

Important details to include in an academic LOR include:

  1. academic standing in a subject
  2. Projects and research that are pertinent
  3. Co-curricular projects and accomplishments
  4. incidents that specifically demonstrate expertise or work ethics

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

As the Head of the Aeronautical Department at XYZ College, New Delhi, I am delighted to write this letter of recommendation for Ms. ABC, an undergraduate student of this department. I have known ABC for two years now, and hence I can confidently discuss her skills and qualities. She is a highly motivated and sincere student who has actively capitalized on every opportunity our college has to offer.

ABC has consistently been among the top scorers of her batch, throughout the course of her degree, and was thus one of the few people to be offered the chance to pursue an honors degree. This requires the completion of extra credits and a publication to receive the degree. She is currently working towards that in parallel with her normal courses. She was also chosen by the student council to teach first-year students who needed tutoring when she was in her second year.

Additionally, ABC has also successfully represented our college in numerous aircraft design competitions, both nationally and internationally. Most recently, her team designed a UAV for "Crop Health Analysis" and won the National Aviator Challenge, conducted by QPR University. Her design reports frequently have something different and innovative in them and solve a real-life problem. Besides this, she has also sparked the interest of many students in the field of aerospace by taking the initiative to organize technical workshops, competitions, and talks. Her event, based on "Air Crash Investigations," organized as a part of our annual technical fest in 2019, proved to be a great success.

Furthermore, ABC was an approachable and effective president of our Aerospace Club from April 2018 to March 2019. During her term, the work of this club went on seamlessly. She not only mentored her juniors in a technical capacity, but her complete dedication was undoubtedly laudable.

Overall, ABC has a very strong sense of community and teamwork, with an undeniable passion for the field of aerospace. She has demonstrated great leadership skills and proved herself to be a valuable student of our department time and again. I am positive that she will prove to be an asset to any college she is a part of and complete the course with flying colors. Thus, I strongly recommend Ms. ABC to your esteemed institution and wish her the best in the same.

2. Professional LOR

The majority of MBA programs abroad have predetermined requirements for work experience. They consequently ask a direct manager for a formal letter of recommendation. The Professional Letter of Recommendation (LOR) Format from a Supervisor differs from an Academic LOR in terms of some specific content that focuses on the applicant's capacity for teamwork, exposure to the field, and leadership skills—all crucial for the MBA course they are applying for.

Important qualities you should mention in a formal LOR include:

  1. Leadership ability
  2. Areas of expertise
  3. Soft skills
  4. Specific work incidents highlighting your strengths

Department of Business Management

Youngstown University

I am pleased to be writing this letter of recommendation for Mr. Praveen Yadav for his admission into the Global MBA Program at Youngstown University. I had the pleasure of interacting with Mr. Yadav for a period of six months as his practice manager while he served as an intern at Citrix Pvt. Ltd. Mr. Yadav was reporting to me directly while he worked on the implementation of an employee management application for the Human Resources Department.

Being one of the top IT consulting organizations in India, Citrix has a rather stringent interview process. It is, therefore, a testament to Mr. Yadav's skills that he scored full marks in the technical round of his interview. Needless to say, he also impressed the interview panel with his excellent performance in the communications round. His interest in software development was evident from the number of certifications and independent projects he had already completed. Mr. Yadav not only secured a paid internship opportunity at our organization but was also put into a project almost immediately.

Mr. Yadav has a mixture of technical expertise as well as communication skills, which is quite rare among most industry professionals today. Within the first few weeks of joining the team, he was able to distinguish himself as an essential member of the team, analyzing and developing the most complex business requirements. Everyone in senior management quickly came to rely on his judgment regarding implementation strategies and execution processes. His love for the work was evident from the fact that he never shied away from putting in long hours and extra efforts to get his tasks completed. His efforts did not go unnoticed and Mr. Yadav won the Best Employee position at our organization for 3 months consecutively.

Mr. Yadav is an ambitious person and is indeed a pleasure to work with. I myself was time and again inspired by his positive outlook and never say die attitude. He is also a team player who intuitively understands that a team can collectively achieve much more than any individual effort. Of his own accord, Mr. Yadav volunteered to conduct a session on Front development for his peers during the internship. His preparation and delivery of the session were appreciated by his fellow interns as well as by the senior management. His approachable personality and excellent communication skills instantly make him stand out as a leader in any group.

I would not hesitate to say that Mr. Yadav is among the brightest of the freshmen I have interacted with, over my 14+ years of industry experience. I am confident that MR Yadav will continue to excel in business school just as he has done in the workplace. His sincerity and zeal make it almost a given that he will be a valuable new admission into the management department. I wish him unbounded success in his professional career and future endeavors.

I would be happy to provide additional information about Mr. Yadav's personal and professional capabilities if required.

  2. Details on the qualifications and skills of the applicant (three paragraphs)
  3. Summary (one paragraph)

How do I write a recommendation letter (LOR)?

A letter of recommendation, unless otherwise stated, is a 400–500 word essay that discusses the qualifications of a candidate. A recommendation letter must contain specific information, such as the association's purpose and duration. In addition, some fundamental formats need to be remembered.

  1. Most universities demand that this letter be written on business letterhead.
  2. The letterhead of the university must be used for an academic LOR, and the letterhead of the company must be used for a professional LOR.
  3. One thing to keep in mind in the latter scenario is that the letterhead should be from the business that the recommender works for. If your recommender has moved on to another company, this typically causes a problem. Therefore, the student needs to be able to select the best recommender.
  4. A LOR is not a repetition of an SOP, which is an important distinction to keep in mind.
  5. A good LOR should highlight aspects or perspectives of your personality that aren't covered in your SOP or resume. Therefore, the best person to recommend you is someone who is familiar with you well, has seen firsthand the caliber of work you produce, and is willing to give specific examples of your valued contributions and excellence.
  6. A generic LOR is strictly prohibited because it adds little value to your application for the program you are interested in. Therefore, strong examples form the core of a good LOR.

  6. Critical thinking and the capacity for analysis
  7. Potential for and activities in academics and extracurriculars
  8. enthusiasm, motivation, and dedication to the intended program

In case you don't lose out on your LOR, we're going to mention some important skills. There are a few skills that you can highlight in your LORs that will help you stand out from the competition. Remember to use some of these skills and not add all of them to your LOR.

  1. Research skills
  2. Leadership Skills
  3. Social skills
  4. Co-curricular activities
  5. Team player & ability to perform task solo.
  6. Communication Skills

How to Select a Good Recommender for LOR

Academic and professional LORs are the two different kinds. A LOR from your college or university is necessary for an academic LOR. While a professional LOR calls for a letter from the company you are employed by. Here are some recommenders you can consider for LOR:

  1. Research head
  2. Project Guide
  3. Department Head
  4. School teachers
  5. University professor
  6. Reporting Manager

Before choosing a recommender for an LOR, be aware of the following.

  1. Choose the recommender with whom you have had a close working relationship or who has supervised your work.
  2. Although recommendations from higher positions are valued, they might not be familiar with you personally or your qualifications. Choose a recommendation from someone who is familiar with both your professional and personal lives, rather than someone in a higher position.
  3. Select a recommender who is both qualified to write a LOR and who can highlight your qualities.
  4. Last but not least, choose a recommender who is happy and willing to write a LOR for you rather than forcing anyone to do so.

Letter of Recommendation Tips

Given that your employer and professor have known you for a respectable amount of time, getting a LOR from either of them may not seem like a difficult task. But it's crucial to check that the recommendation letter format they give you is appealing and effective.

Some pointers for obtaining a strong letter of recommendation for a student are as follows:

  1. Verify the university requirements. Sometimes, universities require the recommender to follow a particular format for submissions and content. For instance, a LOR for Ireland must be submitted with the application, whereas in the USA, LORs are typically submitted separately by recommenders.
  2. The LOR's tone and theme should be consistent. While writing a letter of recommendation, recommenders must take care to avoid using contrasting tones. It should also list the applicant's advantages and disadvantages.
  3. Beginning with a strong introduction: It is recommended that recommenders begin the letter with a brief introduction that includes information about themselves, the current professional role they hold, and the number of years of experience they have. Additionally, a relationship between the candidate and the recommender should be established in the introduction.
  4. Focus on the journey rather than just the endpoints: Recommenders frequently make the error of extolling the virtues of their candidates without providing concrete examples to support them. The best approach is to unbiasedly describe the applicant's abilities and strengths and to provide pertinent examples of each. For instance, if you think your candidate has strong leadership abilities, describe an actual situation where he or she volunteered to take charge and displayed these traits.

Yours sincerely,

To

The Admissions Team

Thank You

Yours Sincerely
