The admission/selection procedure for candidates for various programs provided by the Indian Institute of Management is also known as IIM Admission Criteria. Students seeking admission to the IIM must first complete an online application form. The IIMs are management education and research institutes run by the Government of India's Ministry of Education. They primarily provide graduate, doctoral, and executive programs, as well as extra business administration courses
How to Get into IIM: Common Admission Process (CAP)
Following the CAT exam, each of the older IIMs has its own admissions process. However, nine new IIMs have a Common Admission Process (CAP), which standardizes the selection process.
Here are some key points to remember:
- IIM Udaipur, IIM Kashipur, IIM Trichy, IIM Raipur, IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Jammu, IIM Ranchi, IIM Sambalpur, and IIM Sirmaur are among the nine IIMs taking part in CAP.
- IIM Rohtak was a member of the CAP group until 2020, when it opted out.
- IIM Trichy has been given the task of conducting CAP for 2022.
- The Writing Ability Test (WAT) will not be administered for CAP 2022. As a result, CAP 2022 will include a Personal Interview (PI).
- The IIMs make admission offers independently after the CAP final processes have concluded.
Factors of IIM Admission Process
The IIM admissions procedure is separated into three major parts.
- Shortlisting candidates on the basis of CAT score
- The initial step is to take the Common Aptitude Test (CAT) administered by the IIMs. Once the CAT results are released, applicants are invited to apply for the WAT/GD-PI phase on each IIM's official website. Candidates who have made the shortlist must log in using their CAT IDs to submit their name and CAT score.
- Screening candidates for WAT/GD-PI
- Candidates will be shortlisted for WAT/GD/PI at the second stage based on their CAT score and academic record. Candidates who are shortlisted in all rounds will be invited to a counselling session, which may take place online.
- Calculation of composite score and final selection
- The composite score of each applicant is determined on the basis of several characteristics in the third stage to conclude his/her selection. The last stage of the IIM admissions process involves evaluating an applicant against certain criteria and generating his or her composite score.
The following is a list of the eight key parameters and their definitions.
IIM Admission Parameter | Description |
CAT Score | Total percentage score in CAT exam |
Score on the CAT | The overall percentage score in a three-year degree program. |
Graduation Score | The total percentage of students who passed in Class 12 or equivalent. |
Class 12 Score | The total percentage of students who passed in Class 10 or equivalent. |
Class 10 Score | WAT/GD-PI The performance of each candidate on the WAT/GD-PI is evaluated, and appropriate marks are assigned. |
Academic Diversity | Candidates with backgrounds other than engineering are given bonus points to guarantee that students from other fields are equally represented. The points for academic diversity vary for each campus. |
Diversity by Gender | To ensure that each gender is adequately represented, the IIMs grant bonus points to female and transgender applicants. Gender diversity is valued differently in each college. |
Current Admission Criteria Policy in IIMs
There are two significant changes to IIM approval as a result of the Covid 19 epidemic as follows:

- In the academic year 2024-26, all IIM-IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, and IIM Calcutta, including Top IIM, will be able to provide both online and offline sessions.
