Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, commonly known as GATE is a national level qualifying examination for admissions into Post Graduate Engineering Programs, that is, M.E/M. Tech and Ph.D. GATE is conducted by the collaboration of Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB).
The official GATE notification for 2019 exam was released on July 6, 2018.
The main idea of the GATE exam is to check the comprehensive abilities of a candidate in various subfields of engineering. GATE score's relativity is across various sectors. Several Government-owned companies accept GATE score for recruitments.
GATE 2019 will be conducted by IIT Madras on February 2,3,9, and 10 for 24 Papers in total. The GATE official website is gate.iitm.ac.in.
Changes introduced in GATE 2019
- Statistics, with the code “ST”, has been introduced for 2019 GATE examination.
- Candidates will have an opportunity to apply online even after the last date for an extended period on payment of late fee.
- If candidates apply after September 21 and October 1, 2018, then the late fee is INR 500. A late fee of 20 USD is for candidates who will be appearing for GATE at foreign centre(s).

Important Facets of GATE 2019
- GATE exam will be conducted via online mode, that is, Computer Based Test (CBT).
- Candidates will be allowed to select only 1 GATE paper for examination.
- The GATE score card will be valid for 3 years after the announcement of results for M. Tech admissions.
- It will be conducted across 200 cities in India and 6 cities abroad.
- The exam duration is 3 hours and 65 questions carrying 100 Marks, in which 15 marks will be allotted for General Aptitude Questions, and rest of the questions will be from the subject selected by the candidate.
- Negative Marking is there. 1/3rd marks will be deducted for every wrong answer of that question which will carry 1 Mark, while ½ a mark will be deducted for questions carrying 2 marks.
- The candidates have to select a preferred Exam Centre. The Exam Centres will be IISc Bangalore and all the 7 IITs.
GATE 2019 Eligibility Criteria
- The candidates applying should be Indian Nationals. Candidates from Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Ethiopia and United Arab Emirates (UAE) are also eligible to apply for GATE 2019.
- There is no age limit for applying to this exam.
- The candidates should have attained a Bachelor's Degree from any recognized University or Board. Those who are in their final year can also apply for the same.
- There is no minimum marks requirement, that is, any score in Bachelor's is acceptable to apply for GATE.
- Candidates with Dual Degree/ Integrated Programs are also eligible.
The Online Application Forms of GATE will be available from September 1, 2018, on GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS). The Forms will be released by IIT Madras.
How to Fill the Application Form?
Below are a few steps to help you fill Application form easily.
- Get yourself Registered on the GOAPS Portal. Provide Name, valid email id, and Mobile Number, along with a password for future references. Immediately after the registration process, a unique enrollment number will be generated, which is essential for the candidate's application process.
- You will have to submit all the relevant personal and educational details while filling the application form.
- Scanned passport sized photograph and signature will have to be uploaded along with a Category certificate (if applicable).
- The last step would be to make the payment through online mode, that is, Net Banking/Debit Card/Credit Card.
*Candidates will have the opportunity for application form correction, in case of any mistakes while filling the same. This may happen during the second week of November 2018. Not all details will be made available for correction, and there will be a fee penalty for the same.

GATE 2019 Counselling Brief
There will be no common centralized counseling sessions after the Result release of the exam. The candidates will have to apply separately for colleges of their preferences through the rank and score obtained. To apply into any IIT, candidates can do the same through GATE Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) and Centralized Counselling for M. Tech (CCMT) portal for those who wish to apply for NITs.
*Those candidates who have a valid GATE score card of 2017/2018/2019 are eligible to apply for counseling/ seat allotment in 2019 in any college of their choice.
GATE 2019 Result Details
The Result for the GATE exam will be announced on March 16th, 2019. The candidates can check the same online by providing Enrollment Number, Registration Number (will be generated while filling the Application Form) and Date of Birth. The qualified candidates will have to download their Scorecard from 20th March to 31st May 2019.
The Score Card comprises of the following specifics:

- GATE Score (Out of 100)
- Total Marks obtained (Rough score)
